The POPRISM Web Browser – The 1st freely available web browser for Roku

I am excited to announce the release of the POPRISM Web Browser for Roku Connected Devices. It is the only web browser released for the Roku, bringing some much-needed extra functionality to the device. It is not a full-featured browser yet, but an experimental text-based browser. Features and improvements will be added. First on the list is reliability improvements and bug fixes, and then images, and then html5 video support. Also, because I like you, I didn’t stick any ads in the browser or anywhere else. In fact, the whole thing is open-source. Controls are optimized for Roku remotes, so it’s a pleasant browsing experience. You can get it at https://channelstore.roku.com/details/72711/poprism-web-browser.

Features:

  • 1-of-a-kind app for Roku
  • Read stories, news, and jokes on your TV
  • 100% Ad-free experience
  • Remembers last 5 sites for easy access

Controls:

Up: Scroll up one line
Down/Ok: Scroll down one line
Left: Scroll up ten lines
Right: Scroll down ten lines
Back: Go to previous page
Return: Go to home screen where you can go to a different site

This is cool as hell! Ive tried it out myself and this is flippin awesome! Btw are you planning to keep it text based forever or are you going to eventually make it look normal?

Thanks for the feedback! Glad you like it! Most current Roku devices aren’t powerful enough to run a full browser in them, but it would be cool to have images in the browser at least.

  • I was so excited to see this on my Roku. I have no clue why, but no matter what website address I enter (including the link to your website), my screen either freezes up or takes me back to the main menu.

Hi Chris. Thanks for your enthusiasm. I am sorry to hear the browser isn’t working for you. It is an experimental technology so there are still some bugs to be worked out. This seems to be a common problem some users are having, and I think it’s related to the type of Roku. This should all be worked out in the next update.

  • The arachne dos browser preloads images, the select images if you like. maybe there is something in how that works you can make work.

Great idea. That browser looks like a good reference point. The next step in the browser’s development is to fix bugs and increase reliability, and then after that the plan is to add image support.

Nice idea, but needs to do a lot more to be really useful. On a ‘streaming stick’ it crashed to the roku menu when trying to enter a new site url, but if you get to a site you cant really do anything anyway.

Nice idea, wish you well, but needs a lot of development and testing to be really a useful browser.
